Busy times yet again
You may have noticed that things have been a bit sparse around here

Hello, friends. You may have noticed that I’ve not been posting a lot. I’ve been swamped with non-editorial cartooning work lately. Sprinkle in some personal life stuff and, well, that equates to fewer editorial cartoons and fewer Substack posts. As always, I plan to get back to drawing and posting more editorial cartoons soon. I’m just not sure how soon, but it’s soon … ish.
Friends and fellow cartoonists always seem surprised that I don’t make most of my living from editorial cartoons. (Though if you’d like to see me earn more of my income from cartoons, please become a paid subscriber!) That’s just an unfortunate reality. The last two local news outlets I worked for curbed my cartoons to such an extent that I resigned. And most other news outlets aren’t looking for cartoonists. I’m lucky and honored to be able to do a weekly cartoon for Pepperspectives, and provide occasional cartoons for Remapping Debate, but I spend much of my work week creating artwork for clients. I thought I’d once again share some of what I’ve been working on recently.
Cincinnati Children’s Hospital and Medical Center
I’ve just finished another round of illustrations for Cincinnati Children’s Hospital. The TOPS program at CCHMC helps kids and families recover from traumatic brain injuries and related neurological conditions. I’ve provided hundreds of illustrations for TOPS in the past five years.
Upcoming comic project
I don’t want to say much about this project right meow, as it hasn’t launched, but there will be more information coming soon.
Association of American Editorial Cartoonists
When I’m not drawing editorial cartoons I work to help other editorial cartoonists as Minister of Information for the AAEC. We’re getting ready for our upcoming convention in September, where we’ll be elbowing our way into the Small Press Expo in North Bethesda, Maryland.
Speaking of cartoonists, many of my friends and colleagues who use pens, pencils, crayons and other drawing implements to speak truth to power are using Substack as their main platform. They can all use your help to keep drawing cartoons. I’m going to try to list several cartoonist Substacks each time I post. So take a look at the following Substacks, give them a follow, and stay tuned for more in future posts.
Jack Ohman: Jack Ohman’s You Betcha!
Clay Jones: Claytoonz
Ann Telnaes: Open Windows
Kevin “KAL” Kallaugher: KAL Draws the Line
Help me keep the lights on and the cartoons flowing. Consider becoming a paid subscriber to Kevin’s UnNecessary Things. Your support allows me to draw more cartoons and speak truth to power. You can also support me by leaving me a one-time tip on Ko-fi, or by clicking here to visit my Etsy store, where you can purchase signed prints of my cartoons.

Awwwww, thanks for the mention, Kev. You rock! I'm one of the people NOT surprised that you don't make most of your income from political cartooning.
So glad you'll be nearby in September. My Substack subscriptions may preclude ever affording air fare again ;)
